With the Mayor of London recently giving the green light for the next stage of Aberfeldy Village in Poplar, First Choice Hire is highlighting how its market-leading environmental noise, dust and vibration monitoring services helped award-winning developer Eco World London ensure regulatory compliance, minimize disruption to neighbouring communities and maintain its Considerate Constructor status during phase one of the regeneration project.

The construction site for the first phase of the Aberfeldy Village project was located near residential properties and a school. With this in mind, First Choice Hire installed its noise, dust and vibration monitoring equipment at key strategic points across the development. The best of breed systems, which are highly reliable and accurate, helped Eco World London fulfil its regulatory obligations and demonstrate compliance for the Environmental Health Officer investigating any complaints.

Providing real time data, historical reporting and automated SMS and email notifications sent directly to Eco World London, First Choice Hire installed Svantek SV 307 Class 1 Noise Monitoring Stations and SV 258 Pro Vibration and Noise Monitoring Stations, as well as MET One ES-642 Dust & Meteorological Monitors, opposite the local school and near two apartment blocks. Both Eco World London and First Choice Hire were able to log into a portal remotely to view data in real time.

Svantek’s SV 307 noise monitoring station is designed for permanent noise monitoring and equipped with a patented double self-system check: an inbuilt reference sound source producing 100dB at 1kHz plus real-time check based on reference microphone.

The small, lightweight SV 307 incorporates a class 1 sound level meter with 4G and GPS modems in compact waterproof housing that is easily accessible for remote configuration by First Choice Hire to suit the client’s needs. It also has a patented MEMS microphone.

Svantek’s SV 258 Pro vibration and noise monitoring system is designed to measure triaxial velocity and acceleration vibration levels in parallel and calculate peak particle velocity (PPV) and vibration dose value simultaneously – in compliance with the British Standards (BS-7385, BS-5228 & BS-6472) for PPV.  Importantly, and unlike competitor solutions, the SV 258 also monitors dominant frequencies in real time.

The MET One ES-642 remote dust and meteorological system is an industrial air quality sensor designed to provide accurate measurements of particle concentration in both indoor and outdoor environments. It has a rugged water proof enclosure and LCD display to provide information about particulate concentration, flow rate, instrument status and power.

At the Aberfeldy site, First Choice Hire set up the MET One ES-642 system to monitor PM10 dust particulate levels whilst also recording temperature and humidity at each location.

After conducting an initial survey at the Aberfeldy development location, First Choice Hire used an aerial view and the site plan to determine where to install the systems.  Once operational, the company continuously monitored the equipment, quickly responding to and notifying the client of any alerts and alarms.  Data was downloaded and reports submitted on a monthly basis with a link being sent to the local authority so they could react promptly to any complaints or issues.

As part of the contract, the First Choice Hire team regularly visited the development to ensure the equipment was in good condition, replacing or moving systems as and when required.

Paul Dwyer, Director at First Choice Hire comments: “The Aberfeldy project demonstrates our commitment to providing a proactive service. We go beyond the ordinary by offering support, including visits with our maintenance team, at no additional cost. In fact, on one occasion, I was nearby so paid an unscheduled visit to the Aberfeldy site and noticed that the construction company had tried moving and reinstalling two systems, without success. Within two hours, I had reinstalled the units, despite the structural changes to the site, and in an area that had previously been empty but now with development of buildings fully underway. This avoided the need to send an engineer to site separately – reducing downtime and ensuring the development remained compliant.”

Dave Faunch, Eco World London’s Site Manager during phase one of the Aberfeldy Village project comments: “First Choice Hire provided an excellent service during the three years the monitoring equipment was on site. The initial implementation went well and any issues were dealt with efficiently, without fuss. In terms of the equipment, we particularly liked the historical reporting and automated alerts.

“Overall, the team were very good and helped ensure we fulfilled the local authority’s regulatory requirements while minimizing any disruption to neighbours which is always our priority with any development.”

First Choice Hire believes in making environmental and occupational health monitoring simple and hassle-free. The company’s motto, ‘Hire Made Simple’, reflects its commitment to streamlining the monitoring processes for construction companies, developers and other organisations.
