Powerday, one of the UK’s leading waste management and recycling companies, has announced further expansion of its London coverage with the acquisition of Bermondsey-based company Economic Skips Limited.

The deal, which will allow Powerday to better service clients operating in the south east of London, will see the company acquire all of Economic Skips’ vehicles, as well as its strategically important 7,000 m² site in Bermondsey.

Economic Skips Limited has been in business for over 50 years and has built an established reputation for fast, reliable waste management services. It operates its own fleet of vehicles, and its services include skip hire, roll-on/roll-off containers, wheelie bins and dustcarts, all aimed at meeting the waste disposal needs of larger businesses.

Powerday has grown from a single skip vehicle business in the 1970s to one of the UK’s most innovative and forward-thinking waste management and recycling businesses. It services a broad range of commercial sectors, primarily focusing on construction and demolition.

The acquisition of the business strengthens Powerday’s coverage of London and marks the next step in its ambitious strategic growth plans. It now boasts state-of-the-art Material Recycling Facilities (MRFs) in Willesden Junction and Enfield, with transfer stations in Bermondsey, Brixton, Canning Town, Heathrow and Wimbledon. Additionally, Powerday will now operate close to 200 vehicles across London and the surrounding counties.

In addition to its fleet, employees and the site in Bermondsey, Economic Skips’ environmental credentials were a huge part of its appeal for Powerday as Edward Crossan, CEO of Powerday, explains: “Economic Skips is one of the leading players in London’s waste management sector, working to ensure that waste from businesses large and small is disposed of in an economical, safe and responsible way. In common with Powerday, it delivers the best possible sustainability standards when it comes to waste handling, and these values align perfectly with our own green commitments.”

Liam Kearney, Joint Managing Director at Powerday, added: “We are delighted to have completed the acquisition of Economic Skips Limited, which will further reinforce our presence and commitment to our clients in the southeast. In addition to its extensive fleet and loyal employees, the addition of the company’s site in Bermondsey will enable us to provide an even more efficient, compliant and responsible waste management and recycling service to businesses across the capital, reducing waste miles and minimising transport emissions which is a key driver of our recently published Scope 1 Carbon Strategy. We are very much looking forward to this next stage in our strategic business growth plan which now also involves further developing the legacy and story of Economic Skips Limited.”

Michael Farrell, owner and CEO of Economic Skips Ltd concluded: “My key objective is to secure Economic Skips’ future and to build on its success story. In Powerday I am comfortable that they share our vision, beliefs and objectives of putting our customers at the forefront of what we do and will continue to build the legacy I have started”.
