MILWAUKEE BOLT 200, a Type 2 construction helmet, has been independently ranked by Virginia Tech as the number one helmet for preventing concussions and skull fractures.
The MILWAUKEE BOLT 200 has been independently ranked the leader in safety helmet performance. In September 2026, the Helmet Lab at Virginia Tech named it the top performer for preventing concussions and skull fractures, awarding a 5-STAR rating held by only six other Milwaukee helmets.
The Virginia Tech Helmet Lab is an independent group with over 20 years’ experience researching head injuries. Its testing simulates severe but survivable falls to predict injuries per 100 accidents. The BOLT 200 scored ahead of every helmet tested. The lab only recommends 4- and 5-STAR helmets.
Construction remains one of the most dangerous places to work, and a knock to a helmet can be the difference between a near miss and a life-changing injury. Yet not all head protection is built to the same standard.
Most hard hats are Type 1, protecting only against falling objects. The BOLT 200 is Type 2, a helmet which also guards against the oblique impacts caused by slips, trips and falls. Over half (57 per cent) of fatal and 54 per cent of non-fatal construction brain injuries involve a fall.
The difference: the shell and the liner
Fully EN and UKCA certified, the performance of the BOLT 200 comes down to how its two core components work together. The helmet’s durable Lexan polycarbonate shell, which is the first line of defence, delivers around 40 per cent higher yield strength than the standard ABS used in competitor helmets, so it absorbs significantly more impact energy before it fails.
Behind the shell sits the RHEON Impact Armour Liner. On impact, the liner progressively stiffens, spreading force evenly across the whole head rather than letting it concentrate at the point of the strike.
Together, the shell and liner absorb 95 per cent of transmitted impact force, cutting concussion risk to 15 per cent against the 30 to 32 per cent typical of standard helmets. At high-risk impact locations, BOLT 200 delivers a 32 per cent concussion risk rating versus 53–63 per cent for other products.
“Meeting a standard is the starting point. Performance is the difference,” said Adrien Piriou, vice president of product management at MILWAUKEE. “Being ranked the leader in safety helmet performance by an independent lab such as Virginia Tech tells professionals they are wearing the best protection available. And because it is comfortable enough to keep on all day, that protection actually does its job.”
Comfort drives compliance
Comfort drives compliance. Research shows that workers on site modify PPE, cutting straps or removing liners, mostly because kit does not fit or feels uncomfortable, and every modification voids certification. The BOLT 200 is customisable for any worksite with a 52 to 68 cm ratchet system, colour-coded chin straps for EN 12492 compliance and a BOLT Cooling system to minimise heat stress.
