Leading HVAC specialist, Jet Environmental Systems, has successfully delivered a bespoke heating and frost protection solution for one of the UK’s largest speculative logistics developments, helping Prologis create a sustainable, future-ready warehouse at its flagship DIRFT logistics park in Northampton.

The project centred on DC9, a 326,792 sq. ft. warehouse located at Prologis RFI DIRFT, the UK’s premier logistics park and a key hub within the nation’s logistics ‘Golden Triangle’. Designed to attract major occupiers by combining sustainability with operational excellence, the facility required an energy-efficient solution that could protect critical fire safety systems while supporting ambitious environmental targets.

Working alongside mechanical consultant CPW, Jet developed a tailored specification that combined advanced heat pump technology with its proven jet induction system to deliver frost protection throughout the vast warehouse space while maximising energy efficiency.

Warehouse heating systems have traditionally relied on gas-fired technology; however, as sustainability and operational costs increasingly drive investment decisions, heat pumps have become the preferred solution for modern logistics facilities.

Chris Ludwig, Jet’s technical manager, said: “The heat pump solution specified for DC9 was bespoke. We selected a base unit and incorporated a range of enhancements to ensure it met both the technical specification and Prologis’ operational requirements. Flexibility was important, and the extensive options available enabled us to deliver a fully tailored solution.”

At the heart of the installation is a reversible air-source heat pump system that keeps warehouse temperatures above 5°C, preventing sprinkler systems from freezing in extreme cold and ensuring ongoing fire protection for both personnel and stored goods.Jet Environmental installs future-proof heating solution for landmark logistics hub

Jet’s high-velocity jet induction system is critical to the warehouse’s performance. By recirculating warm air that naturally rises to roof level, the system effectively de-stratifies the space, pushing heat back down into occupied areas. This approach delivers comfortable temperatures at floor level while reducing energy consumption and eliminating the need for additional heating systems.

The solution also aligns with Prologis’ commitment to sustainability, supporting the development’s target of achieving a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and an EPC A certification. Energy efficiency was a key consideration throughout the project, ensuring the warehouse would appeal to future occupiers seeking both operational performance and lower carbon emissions.

Ludwig added: “Large logistics facilities pose unique heating challenges because of their scale and height. Our jet induction technology is highly effective at controlling temperatures in these environments, helping operators reduce energy consumption while maintaining optimal conditions for people, products and critical building systems.”

The warehouse has since been let to the leading logistics solutions provider GXO, demonstrating the success of Prologis’ strategy of delivering high-performance, sustainable warehouse facilities that meet the demands of modern supply chains.
