D2p packaging technology from Symphony Environmental offers built-in, non‑chemical protection against insects and rodents across warehousing, storage, and distribution environments.
The world is facing renewed concern over the resilience of its food supply chains, and Moma Foods in the UK has just announced that it is recalling its porridge pots and sachet products due to potential mouse contamination at its manufacturing site.
While the Food Standards Agency (FSA) continues to warn that insects and rodents penetrating packaging remain one of the leading causes of contamination, retailers, wholesalers and producers must take responsibility themselves to protect against pest threats. They will otherwise be forced to discard entire batches when even small breaches are detected.
This growing challenge extends well beyond farms and into the logistics infrastructure that underpins the food distribution system. To combat these risks, an industry shift is needed toward active protection technologies that align with tightening global standards.
Michael Laurier, CEO at Symphony Environmental Technologies Plc, argues that as supply chain risks intensify, relying on reactive pest control is no longer viable for food distributors.
Instead “Packaging films manufactured with our d2p anti-insect and anti-rodent technologies actively repel pests from the plastic surface itself, preventing pests from settling on, boring through, or contaminating packaging. This ensures the contents remain protected throughout the entire journey from farm to shelf.”
This helps prevent danger to consumers and costly recalls, without altering packaging appearance, recyclability, or performance.
Laurier concludes, “d2p represents a passive, continuous protection that works from the moment the packaging is produced through to the point of sale to the consumer. Industry partners must invest in their packaging resilience and improve overall supply‑chain hygiene across their operations. The good news is that we are here to help.”
