Christmas may be a season of celebration for many families, but for those who have lost loved ones to workplace accidents, it can prove to be a very difficult time of the year.
That’s why Werner is using this year’s National Workplace Day of Remembrance (12th December) to remind people of the vital importance of following correct working at height protocols.
Dave Elson, Werner UK’s Compliance Manager, commented: “We fully support this annual initiative, which is not only a time to reflect on lives lost, but a timely reminder to trade professionals to take care and always observe safety protocols. Our message is quite simply this: don’t become another statistic by taking short-cuts or using equipment that is either in poor condition or not suited to the task in hand.
“Since its launch in 2019, the National Workplace Day of Remembrance has helped raise crucial awareness of the need to be careful when using equipment at work – whether it’s on the factory floor or working at height. Whilst some accidents may be unavoidable, the vast majority can be prevented by observing the right guidelines.
“The HSE’s 2024/25 statistics revealed that 124 fatalities occurred within the workplace during this period – 35 resulting from falls from height. Alongside this tragic loss of life were many thousands of non-fatal injuries.
“Werner is the world leader in the manufacturing and distribution of ladders, climbing equipment, fall protection and ladder accessories. As a responsible manufacturer, we do all we can to inform people how to use equipment responsibly, whilst taking a leading role in raising the profile of good working practices through training programmes and accessible guides available online.”
Prior to using a ladder, check it is ‘fit-for-purpose’ and carry out some quick and easy checks:
Platform: Ensure the platform is sound, undamaged, and locks securely to the rear bar. Check for missing fittings and any bending, folding, or twisting.
Stiles: Confirm the stiles are straight, rigid, and free from bending, twisting or bowing. Ensure the front–rear hinge or attachment is secure and all fixings are in place.
Rungs/Treads: Ensure no rungs or treads are missing, loose, bent, worn, corroded, or damaged. All fixings must be secure. Replace the ladder if any tread is significantly dented.
Feet: Feet must be present, secure, and not warped. Anti-slip surfaces should be clean and undamaged.
Braces/Cross Tubes: Minor wear is acceptable, but any excessive bending, bowing, creasing, or twisting must be addressed promptly.
Dave added: “Our series of practical working-at-height guides provide important advice on being safe and includes:
- Essential tips for safe ladder use at height
- Strategies for employers to reduce risks for employees
- Guidance on selecting the right ladder for specific tasks
- Key considerations when choosing a ladder
- How to inspect ladders before use
“We hope those working at height in whatever industry take the time to access these resources – whether an experienced pro or a new starter.”
